Lucy – Part 3

back to part 2

Scene 4
Martha is in a hospital lunch room eating cheap
packaged food. Her sister Tish is seated across from
her.

MARTHA
So Tish, when are you starting that new job at the
bank?

TISH
I’m not, I turned it down.

MARTHA
You turned it down? But why?

TISH
I couldn’t get any information on who owns that bank
or why I was hired.

MARTHA
But it was a good job, just perfect for you. And the
salary was fantastic.

TISH
That’s what worried me. It was the salary that made me
take those other jobs without asking why I was being
hired. I didn’t think how strange it was that someone
would just call me out of the blue and offer me a job.
I never checked to see why they wanted me. That’s how
I got involved in all that Saxon mess.

MARTHA
But you did wonderful at those jobs. Someone must have
seen that and …

TISH
I’ve taken those jobs off of my resume. It wasn’t like
I got them on my own merit anyway.

MARTHA
But Tish, you can’t turn down every good opportunity
because you’re worried about the motives of the people
who hired you. Sometimes you’ve just got to take a
chance.

TISH
Martha, this is my life. Just let me live it my way,
ok?

Scene 5
In the psychiatric hospital with Lucy. Lucy is painting a
toclophane.

MARTHA
I see that you’re painting today. What is that?

LUCY
(No response)

MARTHA
It looks like, a toclophane. You’re very good. Did you
take art when you were in school?

LUCY
(No response)

MARTHA
I brought you a toiletries kit. I didn’t know if you
had your things with you. Would you like me to brush
your hair?
(Martha takes out a brush and brushes Lucy’s hair. She
leans back enjoying it.)

LUCY
I miss my daily massage.
It’s a shame you got away. It would have been your
job.

MARTHA
You’re talking again. That’s better. We’re going to
take care of you, Lucy.

LUCY
Call me Master.

MARTHA
We all want you to get better. Just do what the
doctors say and before no time you’ll be able to go
home again.

LUCY
I have no home.

MARTHA
Is there anything that I can get you for next time?

LUCY
Yes, the Doctor. I need to see the Doctor.

MARTHA
Why?

LUCY
I need to give him something. To tell him something
about Gallifrey. It’s important. Please Martha, I need
to see the Doctor.

NURSE
Excuse me Doctor Jones. It’s time for Mrs. Saxon’s
dinner.

Lucy grabs Martha’s arm.

LUCY
Martha! Tell him. Tell the Doctor to come. There’s
something he has to know. You will do it Martha.
Please!

NURSE
Excuse me
( Martha leaves the room. Dr. Kinderhaus meets her in
the lobby as she is signing out.)

DR KINDERHAUS
And how was Mrs Saxon today.

MARTHA
She seemed well, but I was wondering can I bring
someone with me next time?

DR KINDERHAUS
Certainly, but who might that be?

MARTHA
A sort of a specialist. He’s called The Doctor.
